It was a double-duty weekend for BSI Racing last week. While most of the team was in Florida for the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup, presented by Michelin; Steven Clemons was deep in the heart of Texas for the VP Racing Fuels Challenge at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin.
After a strong performance that ultimately bore no fruit at Daytona in January, rookie GT4 driver Steven Clemons put out his best performance in pro racing to date. The mission was simple: redemption. After disappointing finishes that were out of Clemons’ control during the Roar, luck needed to be on the no. 76 side.
“This weekend was a fantastic result for us and Steven,” said BSI owner Nick Chorley, who was on-site for the GT4 program all weekend.
“Obviously we were bummed about what happened at Daytona, but we also knew that we had two major things going for us, and that was the fact that we had both a fast driver and a fast car. So, when we got here, we had all the confidence in the world that we’d put it together, and we did. Now we just need to keep pushing for a win, and we’re close to that.”
After rolling off P3 for the start of the race, Clemons found himself in a battle at the front all race long before ultimately finishing P2, marking his first podium in the series, and his first podium since beginning his pro racing career.
Finding himself in another battle for the lead in race two, Clemons was hit with a penalty for violating the track limits that were set in place, causing him to finish P3.
“This weekend felt really good,” said Clemons.
“Thank you to BSI Racing and to Toyota for making sure that the Toyota Supra GT4 was a car that could win. I’m happy to be up on the podium, but we’re not satisfied. I know we can win with this car, so I can’t wait to see what we do for the rest of the season.”
Clemons and the VP Racing Challenge get a bit of a break before returning to action at Mid-Ohio in June.
