Tyler Gonzalez stands on top step after winning race 1 at Daytona

Daytona, Fl -

It was a weekend of firsts for BSI Racing after a successful opener at Daytona International Speedway. Rookie and Shootout Scholarship recipient Helio Meza made his season debut, earning his first top 10 with a P6 finish in race one.

BSI veteran Ethan Tyler found himself firmly in the mix in both races as well. Tyler would finish P9 in race one in the fiercely competitive field, after running in the top 5 for much of the night. His best result to date.

And it was the BSI debut of the local hero, Tyler Gonzalez. Gonzalez, a seasoned Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by Michelin, veteran, did exactly what he was brought to BSI to do. Gonzalez found himself in the front pack for much of the night before passing the no. 65 of Spark Performances Bryce Cornet out of the International Horseshoe

That pass would cement the win for Gonzalez as he held on until the full-course caution came out, effectively ending race one and notching the win for the Florida native, his third win at Daytona in his career.

This marks the first start and win for Gonzalez as BSI Racing. It also marks the first time that BSI Racing has ever held the top step at Daytona. Shea Holbrook and company have come close on a few occasions, but this was the first time the Daytona based team took the checkered flag at their home track.

“It feels so good to finally have a win in our area code,” said team owner Holbrook.

“Tyler is good here. He knows this type of racing and knows how to win at Daytona. This doesn’t surprise us one bit, and it’s a great feeling after coming up short so many times. I’m very proud of the entire team and grateful to our support from Classic Mazda of Orlando.

BSI Racing sits at the top of the team points standings as they head to the Streets of St. Pete for rounds 3-4 of the championship. That race weekend will take place February 28 – March 2nd and can be streamed on IMSA.TV.
