BSI Racing wrapped up an exciting race of firsts as the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup, presented by Michelin, took to the half-mile oval track at Martinsville Speedway last Saturday. The series debuted its oval-track concept that saw loads of action and a significant cash purse up for grabs.

BSI Racing brought four drivers to the event, including the return of series favorite Selin Rollan, who missed the majority of the season due to other commitments. Rollan’s only podium of the season came at Daytona in January, with a third-place finish in race two at the season opener.

Rollan ran strong in the early parts of the race, spending his time in the leading pack behind Jared Thomas and BSI teammate Westin Workman’s no. 13 car. Not long before the stage break, Rollan’s engine failed, forcing him to retire.

Other drivers included no. 95 Farhan Siddiqi and no. 86 Jagger Jones, running the “Cars” themed liveries that have become fan favorites. They finished 14th and 16th respectively.

Lastly, Rookie of the Year Westin Workman came up just short in his oval track debut, finishing second and earning $10,000 cash. Workman, who qualified second as well, was leading late in the race before a caution flag came out with five laps to go.

Workman and Thomas battled all night, but Thomas would go on to get out in front of Workman on the restart, holding him off as the checkered flag came out.

“I’m tremendously proud of our effort,” said Team Owner Shea Holbrook.

“It was so awesome to see BSI out front, leading the way at a race like this. This was a new experience for most of us, and I loved how we represented our brand and the series. It was a ton of fun and we’ll absolutely be back if this happens again.”
